The book starts with the story of Zambezia, the name by which the area encompassing what is now Zimbabwe was known to our forbears before 1890. This extract describes the mythical Chief Hungwe and some slavers.
The book includes chapters on a Portuguese carpenter named Fernandes and a king they called Monomatapa, on Great Zimbabwe, Soshangane, Robert Moffat, Cecil Rhodes and the Rudd Concession, and others. The Zambezia Part then looks at the life and death of Lobengula, and finishes with a look at Frederick Selous, the Pioneer Column, Gouveia and Chief Mutasa.
